Moulton Chapel’s Brenda Carrott, 108, shares her secret to a long and joyful life

An active 108 year old – who rode her bike until she was 90 - has shared the secret to her long and joyful life.

Brenda Carrott, of Moulton Chapel, celebrated her birthday on October 7, with son, Peter and his wife Claudia.

After living in the same cottage for 108 years, Brenda is a well known character in the village. She was raised by her mother, Betsey, when her father, Thomas Marriott, was killed whilst fighting in the First World War.

Many people in Moulton Chapel remember her skills as a dress maker at Beryl’s Shop in Spalding, where she made wedding dresses for brides in the area. In fact the talented seamstress was still making wedding dresses until she was 90 years old.

Jacqui Woods parents, Trevor and Maureen Dennis, had their bridesmaids dresses made by Brenda in 1954. Jacqui said: “I have known her my whole life as she was good friends with my mum and dad.

“She has always been a big name in the village and I think she is remarkable for being on her own for so long – it’s quite some age to get to.

“My family had always lived in the village so Brenda was a part of their lives. She’s amazing and such a lovely lady.”

Claudia Carrott described Brenda as being very active during her life. She said: “Brenda rode her bike to work for 20 years, regardless of the weather and received a new bike at the age of 80 – which she rode until she was 90.

“She would tell you the secret to a long and joyful life would be, no worries… and maybe chocolates.”

Brenda also taught Sunday school and played the organ at the Methodist Chapel until she was in her late 80s.
