Gosberton Youth Centre race night raises funds towards £3,000 still needed for toilet renovations

And…they’re off! Guests enjoyed a fish supper and placing bets at a race night to raise funds for a youth centre that faced potential demolition.

Gosberton Youth Centre received an £18,650 grant from the Asda Foundation as part of its Investing in Spaces and Places project to refurbish the centre’s toilet facilities - but a further £3,000 is still needed for repairs.

Supporters organised a Chippie Supper Race Night at the venue on Saturday night (November 16) with food provided by Jack’s Fish Bar, Donington and the event raised £688 towards the total.

Centre trustee Tom Mehew, said: “We made a profit and the evening was enjoyed by everyone.

“It is a good amount raised and we’re hopeful that we will reach the three thousand target.”

“It doesn't stop there as some other things need doing and every penny counts.”

Primarily for young people aged from seven to 16, from all backgrounds, the centre aims to help them grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society.

However, the High Street building has been neglected and a great deal of work needs to be completed on the three toilet areas which are old and in need of repair and have not been updated for more than 20 years.

The flooring is in a poor condition, difficult to clean and the whole block requires complete modernisation, including the installation of a baby change area.

The grant aims to make the toilets more water efficient, using the latest technology, and reduce power consumption with the installation of new LED lighting.

Mr Mehew, who ran the club with his wife in the 1990s, said: “The centre is functioning well.

“The youth clubs are well attended with between 40-60 youngsters coming along.

“We ran the youth club and we didn't want it knocked down.”

A new sports floor was laid following a grant of £17,000 from the Sports Council and by hiring the venue the committee can generate funds to continue the centre.

The youth club runs twice a month for seniors and once a month for juniors and relies on volunteers to help.

A workshop led by Chain Bridge Forge, Spalding proved popular and educational and the centre also had help from the Bicker Trust for the new heating system.

Further fundraising events include a weekly Wednesday bingo night and a fortnightly bingo on a Saturday.
