Entrants can run, walk, dance or crawl the 5k route of South Holland’s first colour run when it takes place in Long Sutton later this month to raise funds for the town’s new hockey pitch.

Long Sutton Hockey Club, established in 1923, is desperately trying to raise £100,000 towards the £250,000 total it will cost to replace its ageing artificial pitch and is organising a series of fundraisers – including a 5k Colour Run through Cinder Ash Park and the adjacent cricket ground on Monday, August 27.

The race – where competitors are doused in a rainbow of paint - starts at 10.30am following registration and a warm-up led by fitness instructor Helen Lea. The town’s firefighters will also be on hand, getting everyone wet and helping them keep cool, while other entertainment is set to include an all-day barbecue, music from a DJ, a crepe station and bar.

Lynne Braginton, who is part of the pitch fundraising committee along with James Baker and John Sullivan, said the club’s future success could be jeopardised without a replacement pitch.

She added: “We’re hoping the colour run will be well received by the communities within South Holland as this is a first for our area. All the proceeds will go to replacing the pitch which has exceeded its 20 year life expectancy.

“Ideally, we would like to see the Colour Run become an annual event with a family party feel, encouraging fun through fitness, whatever your ability.

“Everyone is welcome to come along; people can run, walk, dance or crawl the 5k route - the only rule is to have fun!”

Everyone who registers beforehand will receive a free tote bag, sponsored by DWB Contractors, with goodies on the day.

Entry to the race is £15 per person with under-fives going free. All under-14s must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is via Facebook or by emailing Lshcastrofundraising@gmail.com

Entrants can wear fancy dress, but a white T-shirt is advised to show up the colours. Runners are also advised to wear swimming goggles or sunglasses.

Lynne added that parking at the club is limited so runners should use the town’s other car parks.

Other fundraisers planned for later this year include President’s Day, a charity bike ride and an 80s night, while businesses and individuals can also sponsor squares of the new astro pitch for £50 each.
