South Holland schools among the county's top 30 for progress from Years 6 to 11

Four of South Holland's six secondary schools are making average or better progress between Years 6 and 11, according to the latest Government figures.

Spalding High School (11th), Spalding Academy (13th), University Academy Holbeach (UAH - 17th) and Spalding Grammar School (27th) are all within the top 30 secondary schools in the county after the latest Progress 8 results released by the Department for Education this term.

The Progress 8 measure is used to rate a child's progress from the end of primary school to the end of secondary school, based on their performance in eight subjects.

These include English and maths, geography, history, languages and sciences, as well as approved non-GCSE courses, where an individual child's results are compared against a national average.

A school’s Progress 8 score is usually between -1 and +1, with the top score indicating that students at a particular school are likely to achieve GCSEs that are one grade higher in each qualification than other, similar pupils nationally.

Michele Anderson, headmistress at Spalding High School, named Secondary School of the Year at the 2019 Lincolnshire Free Press and Spalding Guardian Education Awards, said: "We are very pleased with the Progress 8 data for 2019 which yet again places the school in the 'above average" category nationally.

"The school has consistently been in either the 'above average' or 'well above average ' categories every year since the introduction of the Progress 8 benchmark in 2017, something which we are truly proud of.

"This year’s results are no exception and remain, as ever, a testament to the hard work of our students and staff, along with the support of our parents."

UAH principal Sheila Paige said: "We are very pleased to announce a positive Progress 8 score of +0.08 following an excellent set of GCSE results in the summer.

"But we expect that this figure will increase to one closer to + 0.23 when the final figures, published in January, take into account results for ICT, engineering qualifications and any re-marks.

"These figures include in excess of 97 per cent of the Year 11 cohort and they are testament to the hard work of our pupils and the continuous commitment of both our teaching staff and our governing body.

"We are also very pleased with another year of success that has shown excellent progress in our A Level results which are above the national average.

"The school's achievements have also been outstanding in our vocational and technical qualifications.

"As a school, we are proud that our learners are able to show progress that is better than expected and we commend all our partners on their hard work."
