Average speed camera installed on A16 Sutterton
Plans to introduce average speed cameras to a busy A-road have been welcomed.
The new system will be installed on the A16 in Sutterton this year, replacing the static camera currently in place.
“I think it would be more than welcome,” said Coun Deborah Sands, chairman of Sutterton Parish Council.
“It would be good for it to be average speed cameras and work a lot further than just a flashing speed camera.
“It’s a fast road and it would be welcome.”
It is understood the average speed cameras will operate along the stretch of road from the roundabout where the A16 meets the A17 at Sutterton, heading south towards Surfleet.
“It’s not a pleasant road. It’s had quite a few accidents on it,” Coun Sands continued.
“Anything that would hopefully make it better would be good, certainly for a longer stretch.”
That stretch of road is currently a 60mph speed limit, but the limit planned to be enforced by the new cameras has not yet been revealed.
Resident John Flitchett, a former chairman of the parish council, added: “We have a speeding problem in Sutterton.
“It would be a good thing.”
The plans were revealed in the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership’s annual report, which will be discussed by Lincolnshire County Council’s Public Protection and Communities Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday.
“In 2023, the static speed camera on the A16 at Sutterton will be upgraded to an average speed camera system,” the report read.
It added: “Management and operation of Lincolnshire’s extensive safety camera enforcement system... currently consists of eight average speed, 38 static and approximately 100 mobile camera sites.
“Static camera sites are currently subject to digital upgrade programme that will be completed in 2023-24.”
A total of 48 people were killed and 391 seriously injured on the roads of Lincolnshire in 2022, the report explained.
