Holbeach couple are evoking childhood memories with their Ford Mark 2 Transit fish and chip vans
A Holbeach couple are taking us back to the era of big hair with their classic 1980s chip vans.
Justin Price and Georgina Lee-Price are helping to evoke childhood memories with their Mark 2 Ford Transit Vans, which are affectionately called Betty and Beryl.
Betty is believed to be the only 1980s fish and chip van still in operation and the pair are thought to be only Mark 2 Transits working in the mobile catering industry, via their company The Hungry Plaice.
Mrs Lee-Price said: “Older people really take an interest and we get a lot of looks when we are driving around.
“Some people really take their time to look at her and ask questions.
“They are both absolutely unique and we get a lot of feedback about them.”
The couple, who started The Hungry Plaice in 2017, had a stroke of luck after coming across Betty on eBay.
Betty had originally been used as a fish and chip van in Hertfordshire until she was placed in storage in 2000.
Mrs Lee-Price said: “When we first saw her, we knew that she was going to work as there is nothing like her.
“My grandmother used to have a little koala bear that would hang off her handbag. As I walked back to the car to get something, there was a bear like that on the ground. I have no idea what it was doing on the ground but it felt like someone was telling me to buy her.”
While Betty has had some internal work to comply with gas regulations and engine changes, the couple have tried to keep the inside as original as possible.
As the business received more bookings for weddings and corporate events, the couple decided to buy a second van, Beryl.
Mrs Lee-Price said: “We believe Beryl was used on an MOD site and was bought with low miles so it’s likely she didn’t drive on normal roads if at all years ago.
“These are an amazing pieces of history to own and they get lots of attention.”
