Ban for Kirton drink driver who crashed into roundabout at Cowbit when twice legal limit

A man who crashed his car into a roundabout when twice the legal drink-drive limit has been given a three-year ban from the roads.

Robert Tillin’s Honda Civic caused damage to a pole and sign at Cowbit, a court was told.

The 45-year-old, from Horseshoe Lane, Kirton, was handed a mandatory 36-month ban due to receiving a drug-driving conviction in 2021.

His case was heard at Boston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (November 13), where prosecutor Turan Sunat relayed the details the incident, which occurred at Moulton Chapel Road on August 26.

“It was 11pm when a member of the public heard a loud bang in the direction of a roundabout,” he said.

“They found the defendant’s Honda Civic had crashed into the roundabout and caused damage to a metal pole and a sign.”

Tillin gave a reading of 72 micrograms per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

He had pleaded not guilty to drink driving at a previous hearing, but had admitted driving the vehicle without third party insurance.

“On the last occasion he didn’t realise the offence he was here for would carry a disqualification and he drove here,” said Rebecca Freitas, defending Tillin.

“He pleaded not guilty so he could drive home, but then informed the court he would be pleading guilty.”

Mrs Freitas added Tillin has now found ‘a job where he doesn’t require a driving licence’.

“He is currently staying with his ex-partner so he can work in the Spalding area,” the defence continued.

“But he has now got a job working in Slough as a steel erecter.”

Due to the previous not guilty plea, the prosecution had requested Tillin pay £400 in costs as work on trial preparation had begun, but magistrates dismissed the plea.

As well as his three-year ban, Tillin was also ordered to pay a £400 fine, a £160 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
