Spalding woman banned from roads after drink-driving

A car spotted on the wrong side of the road with no headlights on at 3am in Spalding town centre had a heavily intoxicated driver at the wheel.

The Mazda passed oncoming police in Westlode Street on February 11 and appeared to be speeding up in the 30mph zone, Boston Magistrates’ Court was told last Wednesday.

Officers turned and followed and, near the junction with New Road and Swan Street, witnessed it completely cross the centre white line.

Jordan Wheeler (25) was stopped and alcohol was smelt on her breath, later giving a reading of more than twice the legal drink drive limit.

“She admitted that she’d had a few drinks that evening,” said prosecutor Lottie Tyler.

Following arrest, she gave a reading of 86 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35mcg.

Mitigating, Mike Alexander said his client is now on the right path after suffering personal issues.

“At the time she had become homeless and had real problems - mental health issues,” he told the court.

“She has since been given some medicine and accepted some counselling.”

The solicitor said his client’s intention was not to drink but friends “rallied round her” and she was encouraged to.

“Her words to me were ‘I’m so pleased I haven’t harmed anyone at all,’” he added.

Wheeler, who pleaded guilty to drink-driving, gave a contact address of Estella Way, Spalding.

She was banned from driving for 22 months and fined £120.

Wheeler was also ordered to pay costs and victim surcharge totalling £133.

The defendant will be able to have her ban cut following the completion of a drink-driver rehabilitation course.
