Sutton Bridge Jubilee Beacon was an 'embarrassment' says reader while calls grow for South Holland and Deepings MP Sir John Hayes to comment on party gate
Sutton Bridge Parish Council or whoever organised the beacon lighting, has brought shame and embarrassment on the village once again.
It’s bad enough at Christmas when less than a dozen lights are stuck on lamp posts at the top of the village but the beacon is a new embarrassing low.
It was bad enough being what it was, but they couldn’t get it lit and the fireworks only lasted 1.5 minutes. The sky was still too bright at 9:22pm.
Those beacons cost £490 + VAT and a gas bottle was attached to it. Surely they are meant for small private gatherings by clubs or families. They’re not big enough to make an impact on a village/town especially when they cannot even get them to light.
Surely the council could have built a proper one like those at Long Sutton or Holbeach. Then it could have glowed away as it burned throughout the night. Obviously that tiny ‘garden beacon’ and its gas bottle would have to be removed once people started leaving.
If the council had spent money on a proper beacon like our neighbouring towns, it would be money well spent in the long run. At some time in the not too distant future, we will have a new head of state. It’s not something I wish to talk aboutafter the joyous weekend celebrating 70 years since Princess Elizabeth became Queen but I daresay the council in Sutton Bridge will waste money buying yet another garden sized beacon. They can’t use the one they have as it says 1952-2022 on it, unless it can be taken apart and a new top bit put on, but in any case, people will be laughing once more.
Please Sutton Bridge Parish Council, buy the village a proper beacon and site it on the field behind the car park where it can be seen from the road.
Something like our neighbours have wouldn’t cost too much, considering £500+ has been wasted on the portable one. Someone may as well have burnt £500.
Just stop making Sutton Bridge a laughing stock. I’ve had enough of the council humiliating us.

Voters deserve an answer
Should Boris Johnson go or stay with regards to Partygate?
He made the rules then he decides it’s ok for him not to adhere to them. When asked the question: “Did you have a Party?” A simply answer yes or no was required. He denied it. The truth is, he was there a number of times.
The answer is simply “Sacked” - he’s not fit to lead the country.
My concern on this matter is Sir John Hayes, our MP, has still not got off the fence and put out a statement.
So do you Sir John support Boris’s actions or will you be putting in a letter of no confidence in Boris? Your voters require a answer.
