‘Beautiful’ Service of Remembrance observed in Spalding

A weekend of Remembrance in Spalding culminated with a ‘beautiful’ service at the town’s war memorial.

Following the parade through town to Ayscoughfee Gardens, members of the public joined dignitaries to pay their respects to those who gave their lives in conflict.

“It was beautiful,” said organiser Jan Whitbourn.

“You never know who will turn up but it just gets bigger and bigger every year.

“I’m so grateful to everyone who came to pay their respects and everyone who helped make the event so beautiful.”

The service was led by Rev John Bennett and Aileen Workman of St Mary and St Nicolas Church, while the event was marshalled in the Ayscoughfee Hall grounds by members of the Rotary Club of South Holland.

Tributes were also paid to former Spalding Royal British Legion chairman Colin Jackman, Poppy Appeal co-ordinator Peter Lyon and Jenny Hewitt, who created many of the displays including an eyecatching poppy blanket, who all sadly died recently.

“We miss them all so much,” Jan added.

“They all did so much hard work.”
