Bigger 5G masts proposed in Government plan
Bigger 5G masts looks set to be allowed under plans to boost connectivity.
The Government wants to make it easier to roll out the 5G network - and will permit masts that are 30m tall (98ft) so that signals can be boosted over larger areas.
It says that means fewer masts will be needed in rural communities.
Slimline 15m posts (49ft) could be allowed with only prior notice needed - as per the arrangement for telegraph poles.
This comes after councillors rejected plans for two 20m (65ft) masts in residential areas in Spalding.
Digital secretary Oliver Dowden said: “We want to level up the country and end the plague of patchy and poor mobile signals in rural communities.
"Today we are setting out plans to make it easier for mobile firms to transform connectivity in the countryside and propel villages and towns out of the digital dark ages - providing a welcome boost for millions of families, businesses and visitors.”
He said the plans aimed to strike a balance between ‘removing unnecessary barriers’ and protecting the ‘precious landscape’.
