Signs on parking safety at St John's School in Spalding

Parents with children at St John the Baptist Primary School in Spalding are getting a gentle reminder about safer parking.

Cartoon-style cut-outs of a boy and girl - each with a 'Think Before You Park' lollipop sign - are being stationed strategically to boost safety at drop-off and collection times.

Head teacher Paul Reid, who thanked ex-councillor Jan Whitbourn for a £500 donation to support school safety, hopes the signs will encourage parents to park a little further from the school.

Mr Reid said: "The school safety zone immediately outside of the school is generally adhered to by parents dropping their children off or collecting them from school.

"However, in the busyness of the day, sometimes people do not pay regard to those living around the school site and will park either illegally or without regard to pedstrians' safety and convenience.

"The streets around the school can sometimes be very busy and some people park on junctions or block dropped kerbs.

"The nursing home across the road also has difficulty from time to time with people parking on their forecourt.

"The 'Think Before You Park' signs will be a gentle reminder to people that no matter how rushed they may be, we need them to ensure that they park in a safe and considerate way.

"School staff and our junior safety officers will be using the signs to go out and about, putting the signs at the beginning and the end of the day in those places where we have most difficulties.

"We hope that this will provide a gentle reminder to those parking and hopefully prompt them into parking just a little further afield.

"Often just 100metres away there will be ample safe parking that could be used if people gave themselves just a little more time."
