South Holland District Council reveals education activities to tackle enviro-crimes

Council bosses have explained what educational activities have been taken place to help stamp out enviro-crime – alongside the issuing of fines.

South Holland District Council brought in contractor Kingdom LA Support last year to tackle environmental crimes with the promise that this was not just about ‘generating cash’ and that there would be an education campaign.

Last week the council revealed that Kingdom wardens had issued 296 Fixed Penalty notices during the first part of this year. This included 227 fines for littering, 38 for fly-tipping and the remaining 31 for other enviro-crimes including fly-posting, spitting, duty of care when disposing of waste and failure to produce waste transfer notes.

The council – which keeps 10% of the money generated by the fines – has now outlined the educational activities which have taken place since the contract was introduced.

A spokesman said: “As a Communications team, we carried out an extensive two-month long enviro-crime explainer campaign on social media between March 2023 and May 2023 to help explain to the public what the different types of enviro-crime are, how these are enforced and what the FPNs are.

“Since then, we have re-shared this information on our channels to highlight the issues, as well as issuing press releases, for example about the different offences and fines.

“On top of this our Public Protection team is currently exploring ways to work with young people so we can begin changing behaviours in that way too. Officers also work in collaboration with partners across the county through the Lincolnshire Environmental Crime Partnership supporting countywide initiatives.”
