Spalding boxing club still in search of new base to call home
Spalding Boxing Academy is still looking for a new home for its members two months after having to leave its base just outside the town.
As reported by our sister newspaper, the Lincolnshire Free Press, the boxing club was given notice in July to move out of a site in Kellett Gate where more than 100 members took part in weekly sessions.
The club was started two years ago by its head coach, self-employed builder Stuart Possnett whose aim was to provide a way for people of all ages to improve their fitness, self-confidence and build friendships while learning to box.
Club secretary Tom Smith said: “We’ve had no response from anybody yet, although we’re not pushing too hard at the moment because it’s not feasible to open a new gym at this time.
“We only have about 25 boxers on our cards who can go out and compete at the moment, with other members who come to the club anywhere between once or twice a week and once a month.
“So everything is on hold until we can find somewhere else, although we’ve got friends in Boston and St Neots who are taking our boxers on at their clubs.”
Boxers from the club have competed at amateur shows and competitions, including the East Midlands Youth Championships in January.
Stuart said: "We're keeping the boxers fit and interested by taking them to Boston twice a week to keep them ticking over.
"But even though the club is quite strong for money, it seems hard to find a new place for us in Spalding."
