Pride Team in our towns

A regular issue raised both with South Holland District Council and councillors more directly, is the way our district looks. Many of these discussions concern issues about litter, or the appearance of areas of open space and greenery.

The district council has a very small core street cleaning team, who are responsible for covering the whole of South Holland, and not just large towns like Spalding.

Accepting how concerning such issues are to our residents, the council has allocated extra resources to help deal with some of the more challenging areas, establishing our Pride Team. The Pride Team is now able to specifically target areas highlighted by councillors, parish councils, or members of the public.

The land the team works with can only be in public ownership, as we are not permitted to access private land, nor would it be appropriate to use public money to improve land in private ownership. There are, however, plenty of public land areas in need of attention, as evidenced by the amount of reports the team has responded to over the last few years.

Most recently, work has been carried out in Fleet Hargate, Gedney Dyke, Holbeach, Long Sutton, Pinchbeck, Sutton Bridge, Sutton St James and Whaplode St Catherine’s. This included the ‘spring clean’ and removal of graffiti in an underpass in Holbeach and the removal of fly-tipped waste in Sutton St James and Whaplode St Catherine’s.

Spalding has also been an area of particular focus, with the whole of the Vernatt’s Drain banks being de-littered, the bus station requiring the removal of graffiti in many areas and the full length of Pinchbeck Road being litter picked.

The Pride Team also always do their best to deal with the scourge of littering and dumping we regularly experience in virtually every lay-by along the length of the A16 and A17 where these highways run through our district.

Despite all this activity, we are under no illusions that there is still plenty more to be done, so it’s important that people let us know about any areas that are of concern to them. As I said earlier, we can’t work on private land, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do our best to get the owner to do something about it.

So if there’s an area of open space, a footway or a piece of open ground you believe needs attention, please let the district know about it at www.sholland.gov.uk/reportit or call on 01775 761161. We might just be able to get it sorted.
