Spalding care home residents enjoy day out and get to grips with technology

Residents at Cedar Falls Care Home in Spalding have enjoyed their first day out in more than a year – and started to get to grips with technology.

Organised by Sharon Boyd and Sharon Kendall from the home's activities team, the trip to the ‘We’ll Meet Again Museum’ in Freiston Shore near Boston was the first time they had been out together, or visited anywhere, since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK in March last year.

The museum didn’t disappoint and was full of World War II history and interesting memorabilia. Everyone was thrilled to see Boston’s contribution to the war effort and the vital part our land army and local nurses played in keeping Britain fed, nursed, and cared for.

Residents also enjoyed tea, cake, and sandwiches in the pretty vintage café and they finished the day with a rousing rendition of the wartime favourite ‘We’ll meet again'.

Sharon Kendall said: “We all had a fantastic day; it was great to go out and do something together. The museum was amazing, there was so much to see which created some thought-provoking conversations.

"Many residents remember the last days of the war and the aftermath where goods were in short supply. They also recalled the spirit that brought everyone together in the effort to rebuild the country.”

Residents have also been discovering the joys of online apps, with Sharon Boyd introducing games and colouring applications. Residents have quickly got to grips with engaging with the apps and are enjoying the absorbing games and the new element they bring to the day.

Over the past year, technology has played an important role in keeping residents connected with their friends and families and have helped maintain a sense of community which individuals have valued, particularly during times of restrictions and lockdowns.

Sharon Boyd said: "Technology is accessible for all generations, it’s important we share the things that are available so that everyone can enjoy them, regardless of age.”
