CCTV helped make arrests in sexual assault and GBH cases in Spalding

CCTV has helped to make arrests for an attempted sexual assault and an incident where a car was driven at a person.

A report into the CCTV system across South Holland has revealed that investigations into 82 incidents were assisted by cameras in 2021/22.

At least 24 arrests have also been made in South Holland over the last 12 months thanks to the system, according to a document prepared for the district council's performance monitoring panel.

The vast majority of the incidents captured (75 of the 82) were in Spalding - with three in Crowland and four in Holbeach.

The report highlighted how cameras helped lead to a suspect being charged for an attempted sexual assault on Albion Street where the offender was charged and later taken to court.

A person was also arrested on suspicion of Grievous Bodily Harm after a car was driven at a person on Swan Street.

As well as arrests, police say cameras have been used to gather evidence in at least 32 police investigations, ranging from missing people and drunk driving to assault and use of a bladed weapon.

The data is incomplete for the second half of the financial year due to staffing issues, so the true number is actually higher.

The camera on Spalding’s New Road was the busiest in the district, being involved in capturing 27 incidents over the course of the year. Hall Place (24), Market Place (19) and Red Lion Street (18) are the next busiest.

There are 25 cameras installed around Spalding, Holbeach and Crowland, which are monitored from Boston Borough Council’s control room.

A review is due to take place this year on where the CCTV cameras are placed and how far they can roam, as well as costings for potential new cameras.
