Spalding and Crowland Heritage Open Day events prove to be big success

A number of South Holland’s Heritage Open Days proved to be successful.

Spalding Cemetery, Spalding Gentlemen’s Society and Crowland Abbey played host to some exciting events, with strong turnouts at each one.

David Searle, one of the tour guides at the abbey, was delighted after 101 people attended on Saturday.

“It was quite good,” he said, pleased with 47 visitors on Sunday too.

“We had tours up to the bell, and that went down really well. People were really interested in that.

“It was a very good day.”

Mr Searle is already looking forward to next year’s event.

Tom Grimes, chairman of Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, was happy after the museum’s open day.

“We had around about 80 people there,” he said.

“I think it was a good day. We were having open days once a month before Covid, and this was on the first time we’ve done it since. So it was quite a good thing to do.

“We will probably start opening again on a regular basis now. I think everybody’s glad to be back.”

Sunday also marked the end of a fun week at Spalding Cemetery, with visitors taught about the history of the town.

It was organised by the ‘Friends of Spalding Cemetery Group’, which aims to promote and preserve the area.

Those who went along were also treated to a trip inside the Johnson mausoleum.
