Fun run at St Bartholomew’s Primary School in West Pinchbeck in honour of pupil who died earlier this year

A village primary school is hosting its second charity fun run to raise money in memory of one of its pupils.

Thomas Chatterton, who was a year six pupil at St Bartholomew’s Primary School, in West Pinchbeck, sadly passed away on June 26, after bravely battling cancer since he was five years old.

Headteacher Sophie Ingle said this year’s one-mile event on Sunday, October 1, will raise funds for Brainbow – the UK’s first rehabilitation service for children with brain tumours – and will also be used to update a mural on the front of the school building in Leaveslake Drove.

She added: “I visited Thomas before he sadly passed away and took a cast of his hand. Now we are going to incorporate this into our mural, so that he will always be part of our school community.”

Last year 150 runners raised £900 for charity by completing the event, held in memory of school PTA treasure Celia Couling and Teresa Walton, a relative of pupils, and was split between the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and Breast Cancer Research.

As well as the fun run, which starts at 10.45am, there will also be an inflatable obstacle course, traditional games, a cake stall and refreshments including bacon and sausage buns.

The event coincides with the West Pinchbeck 10K, organised by Halmer Harriers, which has been chosen by Lincolnshire Athletics Association as its 10K Championships race this year.

Karen Wallis, 10K race organiser said this is great news as it gives the group county recognition.

She added: “We are really pleased to have gained sponsorship from some local companies who come on board with us financially and also with goods.

“This is the fourth time we have run the race since taking it on from the Spalding tri-club and hopefully we can make it as successful as in previous years.

“It is our absolute pleasure to be working with St Bartholomew’s Primary School and hope it will gain as much from the day as we do.”

The medals for the 10K event have been designed by the school’s head girl, year six pupil Oliva Chamberlain, who will also set the runners on their way when the race begins at 10.30am.

Miss Ingle and other school staff plan to complete the 10K on September 30 when they will also be raising money for their chosen causes.
