Team from the Chequers of Weston taking on Mount Snowdon charity challenge

Staff from a village pub will be putting their best feet forward when they take on the epic challenge of climbing Mt Snowdon together later this year.

A nineteen-strong team from The Chequers of Weston, including owner Katie Booth, have pledged to climb to the summit of Snowdon – the tallest mountain in Wales at 1,085m (3,560ft) above sea level – on September 4, in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Katie has wanted to climb Snowdon since visiting Wales last year, when she made the journey three-quarters of the way up the mountain via its train. She was also inspired to get her team together after seeing other pub workers join together for similar feats.

‘I’ve had the idea for a while,’ she added, ‘but I wasn’t really sure how many other people would want to do it. Out of a team of 26, 19 have said they will come, which is fantastic.

‘Now everyone’s got about 18 weeks to get ready – we’ve got varying levels of fitness, and range in age from 15 up to 60, but it’s not a race, we’ll all do it on our time – getting to the top is the aim.

‘I’ve got such a great team here; I’m really proud of them, and the fact that so many want to take part and support this cause is brilliant. We’ll work as a team and encourage each other along.’

Katie added that it was difficult to choose just one charity to support but has picked the BHF because heart conditions touch so many lives.

The group hopes to raise at least £3,000 and anticipates the climb, which will see them cover about nine miles, could take up to seven hours to complete depending on conditions.

‘Between us we’ve lost relatives and friends as well as customers due to heart conditions recently – it’s something that affects everybody. One of our team suffered a heart attack last year and they will be taking part too,’ Katie added. ‘Everybody has got a heart – and we need to look after them from a young age, it’s something that everyone can relate to.

‘We’re so grateful to those who have donated already, but hope that between us we can raise a lot more for the BHF to support the work it does.’
