CHRISTMAS FOODBANK APPEAL 2018: Students and staff at Spalding Academy show the results of a seasonal hamper project for Agapecare Foodbank
Students and staff at Spalding Academy have gone above and beyond the call of duty for struggling individuals and families in the town.
The school’s annual Christmas Hamper project was so successful that volunteers from Agapecare Foodbank Spalding needed a trailer to collect boxes of tinned and dried food, soft drinks, seasonal sweets and cakes, toiletries and toys yesterday.
Amanda Halifax, of Spalding Academy, said: "We have a competition between our six houses every year to fill a Christmas hamper every year.
"The students have done really well this year, with every house coming back with a full hamper.
"One house managed to fill ten hampers and some students who couldn’t bring in any food brought in money instead so we could go the supermarket and buy food to fill the hampers."
The hampers were the last in a series of charity and community projects at Spalding Academy this term.
Nearly £1,300 was raised by students and staff for Children in Need last month and, in October, the school filled more than 140 shoeboxes for children in Eastern Europe as part of the Rotary Club of South Holland’s appeal.
Deputy head teacher Brett Sinclair said: "Our school is part of the community here in Spalding which is why students and staff have brought so much food in the first place.
"This is just one of many things we do in working with the community in order to reinforce the part we play here in Spalding."
