Clean up of Spalding town centre grot spot is welcomed

The clean up job of a well-known town grot spot has been welcomed.

The former Bull and Monkie pub on Spalding’s Churchgate has long been an overgrown mess, with long grass and weeds on the grounds and foliage growing through the fence towards the street.

But the site – which recently sought planning permission to be transformed into an 88-bed care home – has been given a dramatic makeover.

The ground work has been welcomed by South Holland District Council deputy leader Gary Taylor, who recently praised the work put in spruce up a town pub.

“It’s been an area which has been under the spotlight for some time and has brought comments from local residents who are clearly not happy with the situation,” he said.

“We share their concerns and don’t want to see these buildings in a bad state of repair.

“We need to put pressure on owners to do their bit and improve the realm and the overall street scene, which is the the first image you see of an area. It’s important for a reputation.

“Clean and safe streets are so important.”

SHDC have recently written to the owners of the neighbouring Ye Olde White Horse, giving them ‘one last chance’ to improve the building council leader Nick Worth labelled a fire hazard.

South Holland District Council confirmed it’s Planning Enforcement team had worked with the owners to get the work done, although the maintenance was not carried out by SHDC.
