Holbeach St John club hosts national event

Pilots displayed their hair-raising flying talents at Fenland Aero Club’s Holbeach St John airfield on Saturday when the club hosted the British Aerobatic Association, writes Alastair Goodrum.

The weather was ideal for this annual event but, with the four scheduled Fenland competitions failing to attract sufficient entries due to aircraft problems, poor flying weather elsewhere in the country and the knock-on effect of Covid restrictions, competitive flying, sadly, had to be cancelled.

All was not lost, though. Judges had already arrived and so, in order not to waste the perfect flying conditions, pilots were allowed to practice for their next aerobatic competition – only a week away.

Each pilot flew his/her competition routine over the judges, then received expert feedback on their aerial performances.

Despite the curtailed programme, in glorious sunshine spectators had close-up views of all the aerobatic and other visiting aeroplanes.

They were not disappointed either, because they could still enjoy the sight and sound of brightly-coloured sports aeroplanes being thrown about a clear blue sky at the final special-event day at the airfield this year.
