Spalding’s Welland Yacht Club to hold open day
A club is offering people the chance to have a go at sailing.
Spalding Yacht Club will be providing an opportunity for potential sailors to head out onto the water during its open day which will run from noon to 4pm on Sunday, June 8, at its Cradge Bank site.
The club is supporting the Celebrate the River Day, in association with Spading Water Taxi and the Moorings Pub, which is being held on the same day. Some members will be part of the flotilla.
All participants who want to join in the paddle down the river to the Moorings pub - by whatever means - will have to be on site at 9.30am to register. A bacon roll and tea will also be on offer.
Participants - who must wear a life jacket or or buoyancy aid - will be able to launch and return at the club where ample parking and further refreshments are available.
A club statement said: “In conjunction with the Celebrate the River Day, the Welland Yacht Club will be running an Open Day from 12 - 4pm where anyone can come along and try their hand at sailing under the watchful eye of RYA (Royal Yachting Association) qualified instructors and experienced helms.
“To avoid the queues organisers encourage anyone wanting to take part to book a slot on the Welland Yacht Club website. There will be boats available for those that turn up without a booking but people may have to wait .
“All you need to bring along is a change of clothes and footwear as the club will provide life jackets.
“Also on site will be the Spalding Branch of the RNLI who have a close association with the club and will have information on the vital role they play on the water in the UK. For those not wanting to get their feet wet there will also be a sailing simulator.”
Information on the day and what the club is about can be found on the Welland YC website wellandyachtclub.co.uk/openday
- Visitors to the event will also be able to pick up a copy of the Spalding Riverwalk Arts Trail map.
The artwork of way marks, signage and willow sculptures were introduced as part of the Spalding Reconnected project - which received £233,163 from the National Heritage Lottery Fund.
