Crowland rallies to remember fallen with poppy display on historic abbey
Thousands of poppies are draping over one of the area’s most historic landmarks to remember the sacrifice made by service personnel.
The people of Crowland are once again honouring those who have given their lives in service to this country with its special poppy display for the second year running on the historic abbey.
But this year, the town is going one step further by adding purple poppies to remember the animals which also played a part in the wars.
Purple poppies have been knitted and crocheted to help decorate a ‘Lest We Forget’ sign near the front while plastic flowers created by youngsters from the Abbey 345 group were also due to be planted.
Members of Crowland History Group have also created a special display to honour some of the service personnel whose names are listed on the memorial. They have researched some of these names to help honour the sacrifice they made. The display can be seen in The Hub.
Flower arrangements of red, white and purple poppies can be seen in the Hub and in the Abbey.
The community also rallied around to place the poppy drape - which was made last year by people in the town who knitted and crochet 6,000 poppies - back on the Abbey.
Sue Strickland, who is a trustee and secretary of The Hub, has praised the community for rallying around and getting involved.
She said: “It has been a big community effort.”
