World Cube Association holds contest at Springfields in Spalding
Almost 200 puzzle solvers took part in a mammoth contest in Spalding - with record breaking results.
The UK branch of the World Cube Association held the speedcubing competition - which involves classic Rubik’s Cubes - at Springfields Events and Conference Centre at the weekend.
A total of 194 people travelled from all over the country to get involved in event, where those taking part completed the puzzles against the clock.
Not only were they playing against the clock, but some rounds saw the puzzle solvers - known as cubers - only using one hand and even being blindfolded.
Vice president of the UK Cube Association, Sam Spendla, who organised the event with 13-year-old Daniel Partridge, said: “The competition was a great success and we had nothing but compliments about the venue and the organisation of the competition.
“We also had a UK national record set in the Pyraminx (a pyramid shaped puzzle) event, where Edward Burgess (17) managed to solve it in a single time of 1.17 seconds, putting himself 24th in the world.
“We’re definitely planning on bringing cubing back to Spalding this year and beyond.”
The main event was the 3x3x3 contest which was won by Luke Burns (15) with an average of 8.27 seconds and a best single solve of 6.37. Jacob Chambers finished second with 8.53 seconds and Ben Stokes was third with a 9.42 seconds average.
