Arson attacks in Gedney Hill are a 'mystery', according to police in South Holland

Police are mystified over a series of fires on farmland in Gedney Hill that are now being treated as arson.

More than ten cases of "deliberately fire-setting" have been reported off Lutton Gate Road, between Gedney Hill and Throckenholt.

The latest fire took place at about 7pm on Sunday when a small amount of straw in a field was set alight.

During a meeting of Gedney Hill Parish Council on Monday, PCSO Fylippa Bennett said: "The fire service was pretty quick in getting out there and the crew had a thermal imaging camera with them.

"But no accelerant was found and the weather wasn't a deterrent either because it was raining on Sunday night.

"We've done house to house enquiries but we don't have any leads and nobody has seen or heard anything.

"It's a mystery that we've got this going on at the moment and we really need to stop these fires from happening because we'll get to a point where it will become very dangerous."

Villagers have been asked to share any information they have about the fires with the police, with a senior fire officer having described them as "the mindless actions of selfish people".

Danny Moss, group manager for prevention and protection at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said: "We are aware that there have been a number of deliberate fires in the Gedney Hill area recently.

"Dealing with these incidents ties up valuable resources and if a call to a life-threatening emergency had come in to us, we could have been delayed in attending because of the mindless actions of selfish people."

South Holland sector neighbourhood policing inspector Gareth Boxall said: "There have been more than ten fires in the Lutton Gate Road area since August 25.

"All these fires have been on a relatively minor scale, with the majority having involved small areas of stubble and waste straw.

"However, a number have required the attendance of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and we continue to work with fire officers to catch those responsible and prevent any further fires.

"We believe that all the fires were started deliberately and are investigating them as a series of arsons."
