GOING GREEN: Council car parks to get electric vehicle charging bays in Spalding, Holbeach, Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge?

Electric vehicle charging bays could be on their way to council-run car parks in Spalding, Holbeach, Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge, if proposals go ahead.

South Holland District Council is currently looking at bringing charging bays to Spalding's Vine Street and Victoria Street car parks and the Fishpond Lane car park in Holbeach.

Other car parks being looked at as suitable for charging bays in Spalding are those in Herring Lane, Holland Road, Priory Road, the Castle Sports swimming pool, Sheep Market, the Vista and Winfrey Avenue.

In Holbeach, the Boston Road car park is also being considered, as is West Street in Long Sutton and Kings Road in Sutton Bridge.

In its proposals, the council wants to ensure that any charging bays are only used by electric vehicles and those vehicles must move out of the bays once charged.

A spokesperson for the district council said it was too early to give an official comment - and a date has not yet been announced for the implementation.

However, in a recent Cabinet Call column for this newspaper, deputy leader Coun Malcolm Chandler (also portfolio holder for strategy, governance and transformation), explained how the council was seeking grant funding in order to install electric charging stations.

"There are currently more than 1,800 electric vehicles owned by the residents of Lincolnshire..." he said.

"Today, there are four electric charging stations in South Holland, situated with private businesses in Spalding, Holbeach and Long Sutton.

"This is a number we have ambitions to grow and support, with aims to construct stations across the district in the near future."

Among the current premises that have electric charging stations is Springfields in Spalding.
