Archaeological trenches to be dug at the Spalding Castle Sports complex as part of £26million revamp

Archaeological digs are due to start next week as part of a £26million project to transform an ageing leisure centre.

Parts of the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding will be cordoned off for a four-month project to see if the site holds any ‘potential archaeological artefacts’.

This work could finally solve the riddle of a long-running mystery surrounding Spalding Castle- and shed light into what the structure was like and its precise location which have been lost to history.

The ageing Castle Sports Complex is due to be getting a major revamp, which will include new swimming pools and 3G pitches, after securing a £20million Levelling Up grant last year.

South Holland District Council held a public consultation earlier this year on plans for the Health and Wellbeing Hub at the Castle Sports Complex before submitting the planning application in May. The council’s planning committee is due to be discussing the application in November.

Ahead of any construction work, archaeological trenching will be taking place on the grassed areas on the site.

A council social media post states: “As part of the pre-commencement process for the new South Holland Health and Wellbeing Hub, archaeological trial trenching will take place within the grounds of the Castle Sports Centre in Spalding from Monday, September 23.

“These works, which will last for around four weeks, are required to determine the presence of any potential archaeological artefacts prior to construction.

“The car parks, children’s play park, outdoor bowls and cinder track will remain open as normal throughout these works, with the main grassed areas closed off by Heras fencing.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause, and thank residents for their continued support with the project.”
