Cowbit residents launch fundraising campaign to create memorial to Queen Elizabeth II

A fundraising campaign to create a lasting memorial to Queen Elizabeth II in Cowbit is gaining support from residents.

More than £1,200 has already been donated to the campaign, headed by Mark Brooks and friend James Stamp.

They hope to create an engraved rock, celebrating the life of the former monarch, and a seating area.

“We can make a small garden, put a memorial stone in there,” explained Essex native Mark, who has lived in the village for almost 40 years.

“The Queen is a big thing for us, my family and me.

“I thought it’s the least we can do to remember her.”

More than £1,100 has already been sent to an online GoFundMe page, with additional donations being made at the village shop.

The organisers have held talks with Baytree about obtaining a stone and bench, while Gary Higgins, a Whaplode Drove-based engraver will help complete the tribute.

The GoFundMe page has set a target of £3,000, but Mark is confident the plan - if given the green light by the parish council - can become reality.

Any additional funds raised will be donated to Cowbit St Mary’s Primary School.

“We wanted to involve the school,” Mark, 53, added.

“We’re just trying to get them involved and educate them about who the Queen was.

“She was always there in our lives but it’s different for them.

“People will remember but the young kids might not.”
