Holbeach has lost its crisp packet recycling point after changes were made to the scheme nationally

A crisp packet recycling that raised money for new bicycle racks in Holbeach has been wrapped up.

For eight months, people in the town were encouraged to take their empty crisp packets to a drop-off point at the parish council offices in West End.

Coun Isobel Hutchinson, who launched the scheme in February, said: "This scheme was a great idea from Walkers Crisps to do its bit for the environment.

"Members of the public took it upon themselves to take their empty crisp packets to the drop-off point and the scheme was so well received here that residents from as far afield as Boston were visiting our offices.

"It was so rewarding to see the community coming together over the last eight months to reduce the impact empty crisp packets have on the environment and, as a result, there has been some cycle racks bought for installation in the town to further the benefits seen from the scheme.

"However, as the uptake of the scheme has been much bigger across the UK than first thought, the criteria for collection points has been changed and Holbeach no longer meets them.

"I have appealed this decision but to no avail so we have had to stop collecting empty crisp packets until further notice.

"Nevertheless, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of the public who did their bit for the environment."
