Fleet woman set to host a Christmas-themed fundraiser in honour of grandmother – who lost her battle to cancer last year

A woman who hopes to honour her late grandmother with a Christmas-themed fundraiser, says it is the final part of her grieving process after losing her to cancer last year.

Crystal Rudd, 30, of Fleet, is set to host a charity Christmas light display for her grandmother, Thelma Gowland, who died in 2023 after battling with bowel cancer for three years.

The fundraiser has received a positive response from members of the community and Crystal has been given donations towards the event from big brands such as B&M and Home Bargains.

Crystal said: “My nan became ill during lockdown but, due to Covid, there was a delay and no doctors would come out to see her. She wasn’t able to get diagnosed until months later.

“All of the proceeds will be going to Bowel Cancer UK and I feel passionate about raising money for it. It’s part of my final grieving process and I am also hoping to take part in a mud run for Cancer Research UK next year – it’s all to help keep my memory of her alive.”

The event will take place on Saturday, November 16 at Crystal’s home on San Carlos Close, Fleet, PE12 8PG, between 5.30pm and 9pm.

Crystal’s family home will be transformed into a Christmas grotto with festive lights and decorations. There will be free hot chocolate, snacks, face painting, special visits from Santa and Disney princesses and a raffle.

Crystal added: “We were contacted by B&M and Home Bargains, who heard we were hosting the event. Home Bargains invited us to visit their warehouse in Liverpool to pick up four trolleys worth of Christmas lights and decorations. B&M also gifted us a £100 voucher.

“People in our community have donated raffle prizes and old Christmas decorations and I feel very supported by everyone who has donated or gifted us items to use on the day.”
