Spalding's Daffodil Route to be improved for cyclists
Hopes that a cycle route between Pinchbeck and Spalding will finally be improved have been raised after a fresh commitment to deliver the scheme.
The Daffodil Route, connecting Spalding Cemetery with the Johnson Community Hospital and Wardentree Lane, has been included in an action plan of projects to be carried out in South Holland.
District council cabinet members are set to discuss the plans at a meeting on December 15 as part of an effort to improve health and wellbeing opportunities across the area.
David Jones, chairman of Spalding bicycle action group Pedals, said: "It all started in the 1990s when Lincolnshire County Council decided to name routes for cycleways in Spalding after flowers.
"There's a Tulip Route, which runs along the River Welland and Coronation Channel up to Springfields, and a Crocus Route that goes past Spalding Grammar School, across the river and along Matmore Gate.
"The Daffodil Route was meant to start at the south of Pinchbeck Road, using the old railway track that ran from Spalding to Boston, then run along the whole of Wardentree Lane, Enterprise Way and Moortoft Lane.
"It's a beautiful place to ride and it would be such a lovely part of what Spalding has to offer for tourists."
An update on improving the Daffodil Route, to be paid for through a developer's agreement signed as part of the Spalding Power Station project in 2010, was given during a council meeting last Wednesday.
Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for environmental services, said: "There's been a huge amount of time spent on the creation and coming forward of the cycle route, much to the frustration of Pedals who have been heavily involved in this.
"We're well aware of what the route is and, given the amount of funding that's there, I'm sure Pedals will be very happy to see it delivered."
AcSouth Holland District Council spokesman confirmed that an £80,000 budget, which comes from the Spalding Power Station project, will be used for repair and other improvement works.
