Daniel wins Spalding Grammar School race to Whitehouse

A new USA president was sworn in on Friday after Spalding Grammar School concluded its whirlwind race to the White House.

Politics from the far side of the pond have had the school gripped over the last three weeks.

In the end it appeared to be a walk in the park for the Alliance Party's Daniel Dorey-Rodriguez, who with his vice-presidential running mate, Ethan White, took 36 out of a possible 40 states.

But the quirks of the American voting system mean the popular vote would have been much, much closer.

And Daniel was the first to praise his rival for the Oval office, Rebecca Long, and her vice presidential candidate Franklin Stokes.

The whole thing was a student-led initiative with Franklin and fellow politics student Jack Carson in the driving seat, helped by member of staff Sam Grant.

On Friday, head boy Will Gurney announced the result in assembly.

Daniel said: "We just want to say 'thank you' to everyone who voted, not just for us but also for Fraternity."

Daniel and Ethan were impressed by the intellectual depth of the political discussion on all manner of subjects.

Ethan said: "It think it was done very well - the fact that it wasn't a popularity contest was very good."

It all started with each class becoming an American state with governors and deputy governors elected and then presidential and vice-presidental candidates were chosen.

On Wednesday Chris Carter and Jan Whitbourn were in school to chair a Question Time style debate, just one in a series of events that saw students focus on subects as diverse as climate change to social media.

Rebecca told us: "I have definitely learned a lot about the way the American electoral system works and it has been very enjoyable."

Franklin said: "I felt it went really, really well. Every student got involved in some form or another."
