South Holland District Council’s cabinet has made decision on how our waste will be collected
South Holland will be ditching bin bags and moving to wheelie bins after a major decision taken by leaders tonight.
Members of South Holland District Council’s cabinet have finally settled the long-running debate of whether to scrap the traditional green and black bag collections and introduce wheelie bins. They voted for bins with eight in favour and one abstention.
The council says that new legislation, the Environment Act, is driving the need for changes on how we collect our waste — but the current service is also not working well as it overspent by £215,000 in the last financial year and key recycling targets have been missed.
The move comes despite the fact that a majority of residents voted to keep bin bags in a survey last year.
Cabinet members were recommended to approve a new service with 240-litre bins for residual waste, recycling and paper and card along with the mandatory food waste caddy (23litres).
A report said food waste will be collected weekly with residual (non recycled) waste on alternate weekly basis. Recycling and paper and card will be collected on an alternate fortnightly basis.
