Cowbit’s Tyrrell’s Farm announces details of its pumpkin picking events

It’s time to brush the cobwebs off your wellies, as pumpkin picking season is back.

Tyrrell’s Farm in Cowbit is gearing up for its annual celebration of the seasonal squash - with a host of events alongside its popular ‘pick your own’ facility.

The family-run farm will be opening for its third year every weekend from Saturday October 7 from 10am - 4pm. It will also be open every day in the October half term.

There will be more than 39 different varieties of pumpkins and squashes to choose from - as well as a programme of entertainment options.

These include a face painter, cake sale and sweets stall.

Farmer William Tyrrell said: “The pumpkins are starting to turn a nice shade of orange - we’re looking forward to it. We have enjoyed the first two years immensely and we’re going to see how we go this year.

“There will be a modern tractor on site so make sure to watch the tractor in the field and you might find a little surprise.”

The pumpkin prices will start from £1 and there will be plenty of photo opportunities, no dogs allowed.

William is the fourth generation in the business - and the family has been in the village for over 100 years.

“All of the pumpkins that visitors will see in the field have grown there from seed.

“It all starts when we plant a seed in the ground and leave the pumpkins to grow, we then look after them until people come and pick them up.

“After everyone has visited, all of the remaining pumpkins will be picked up and given to the livestock farmer to feed the cattle, anything else left will be ploughed back into the ground – nothing goes to waste.

“The farming world is gradually getting more challenging, things are altering and times are changing, so by opening our fields for pumpkin picking, it is our way of diversifying to try and provide a service to the public at the same time as creating an income for ourselves.

“Everyone is welcome to our pumpkin picking. Grab a barrow and have a walk around to see what you can find – we do advise if it does rain, make sure you bring your wellies.”

There is no booking required, just turn up on the day.
