Vastly different views on Brexit
In this week's Lincolnshire Free Press Letters, two readers have contrasting opinions on Britain leaving the EU.
You can’t blame it all on Brexit
In your last edition you published an open letter to Sir John Hayes.
The writer suggested that South Holland is in “a total mess”! The suggested reason? Brexit!
No mention of the fact that we are still dealing with a global pandemic.
The writer goes on to bemoan that crops are rotting in the ground, that the lorry driver shortage is purely down to EU drivers returning to their home countries and asking how many Brexit voters “regret” voting Brexit!
Can I suggest that when we voted to leave the EU’s clutches in 2016 that businesses had several years to come to terms with that fact before we actually left.
It was well known that our open border situation with EU workers would be tightened considerably.
Can I also suggest, born out by many large company bosses’ words in recent times, that some growers, transport firms and others who have capitalised on cheap readily available labour, did very little to invest to alleviate the need of this endless flow of foreign workers!
One of Spalding’s largest transport firms saw this coming some years ago and through excellent management and foresight brought in extra recruitment, hugely enhanced recognition of the value of our lorry drivers and first class training for hundreds of new HGV drivers to the industry.
From what I see and read, many of the problems being experienced now by much of agriculture and industry in general, have come about through lack of investment in modern techniques, proper remuneration and training.
Any government can only be responsible for so much before the onus of responsibility falls on each and every one of us, and this includes agriculture, industry and fishing etc to be forward thinking and adopt a “can do” attitude towards bettering our future and the future of our children.
I firmly believe this is a truly amazing country that is full of fantastic business leaders who are fully capitalising on the opportunities that have come about from our exit of the over burgeoning EU and it’s ever increasing red tape!

Brexit has been a betrayal of our nation
Sir John Hayes’ latest Free Press column (October 26) is one of the most disingenuous, dishonest and deceitful articles that I can recollect him writing.
When failed politicians attack an institution with such scant regard for the facts, one questions why.
Sir John Hayes and his ilk voted for the very deal he now condemns with such passion, he supported Lord Frost, he supported our Prime Minister.
Brexit has been a betrayal of our nation, reduced our global influence to that of a pygmy, and in time will create tremendous internal pressure in our nation.
We have only experienced a limited fallout, the future will be different.
One should also remember that Sir John Hayes also voted to keep sewerage flowing into our rivers and seas
