A sad day as Jessops bakery closes in Donington

A bakery in Donington today closes its doors (Thursday).

Staff at Jessops the bakery, which is a family run business, will serve its last customers until 3pm today.

Posting on the Spotted: Donington Facebook page at the weekend, one of the managers said: "Just worked our last Saturday. Can't believe we close on Thursday for good.

"Been such a fantastic company to work for; will have to visit Swineshead and Kirton for my bread and cakes from now on.

"Thanks to all of our lovely customers who have supported us over the many years we have been open.

"Like they say 'all good things have to come to an end.' Best wishes to you all, Elaine, Rachel and Sonya .. xxx'

The shop, in Market Place, is now up for sale on online property site Rightmove with a guide price of £125,000 and marketed by Longstaff.

Parish councillor for Donington, Jane King, who is also a district councillor for the ward, said: "It is worrying that we have lost the bank and now the bakery.

"I am worried about what is going to be next.

"It is a shame that the footfall in Donington, in the Market Place, is not looking as busy as it has done for quite a while.

"I have noticed a difference since we lost the bank."

We contacted a member of the Jessops family who did not wish to comment about the closure, except to confirm it was happening.

The reason for the closure is not known.

Jessops has two other bakeries, one in Kirton and another in Swineshead.

On its website it explains that the bakery business has been run by the same family for four generations, since Abraham Jessop bought the bakery in Kirton in 1926.

Commenting on the closure of the Donington shop on Facebook, one customer said: "Look after yourselves...Thank you for the smiles and the chats."

And another person added: "Oh no that's a pity to see this shop going."
