Donington's library writes its own success story
Donington's volunteer-run library is writing its own success story with expansion on the cards so it can cater for a wider variety of activities.
District and parish councillor Jane King says Lincolnshire County Council has agreed the library can take on a ground floor room and kitchen in the High Street building.
There are also plans to use a 30ft stretch of the back garden for outdoor activities.
Coun King says it is envisaged the ground floor room will be multi-purpose, used for children's arts and crafts, and hired out for meetings and classes.
The library opens Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays but currently caters for children's art activities only when it is closed to book-borrowers.
Coun King says to accommodate children's art days, the main library room has to be switched around - shelving is moved out of the way and tables and chairs are brought in.
She said: "The library has just had its second anniversary. With the band of volunteers we currently have, it has gone from strength to strength and with this additional big room we can continue to move forward."
Coun King believes there will be substantial costs involved to make the additional room and kitchen ready for use.
She says Lincolnshire County Council has been very helpful so far, and she's pleased the authority gave its consent.
Coun King said there are certain things the council, as landlords, will have to take care of, such as electrics.
Other jobs will include re-plastering and "some of the flooring may need to come up".
Coun King says it's a question of who does what but "as a group we have no problem in doing decorating".
