Weston youngster Neive Corry set to move to Mississippi or Ohio in USA for football scholarship in 2023
A talented youngster has defied her critics to secure a football scholarship in the USA.
Neive Corry, from Weston, has been offered the chance to move to either Mississippi or Ohio in August 2023 for an exciting few years of study and sport.
The 17-year-old currently plays as a goalkeeper for Peterborough United Ladies, who are putting her through a BTEC Level 3 in Sport and her A-Levels.
Neive’s mum, Jess Glue, is delighted for her daughter - and says her success is motivated by some of the treatment she received when she first started the sport as an eight-year-old.
She played with a Tydd St Mary boys team from that age until 16, also switching between girls sides at Boston United, Norwich and Holbeach United.
“We were known as the team with the good goalie. But when we showed up to play, because she was the only girl, people used to laugh at her,” Jess said.
Neive, who also referees local games, first applied for American scholarships three months ago - and received her Ohio offer on Tuesday.
She has yet to select her final destination, but is thrilled for a four-year course nonetheless.
“She basically lives and breathes football. It’s her life,” Jess said. “Her dream is to be a professional footballer and play daily.
“I feel starstruck sometimes, because she is amazing.
“We live in a little village, and I couldn’t be prouder. It’s a massive opportunity for her, and I’ll support her no matter what.”
