Music workshop in Donington celebrated medieval and renaissance sounds
Musicians from around the country gathered in one of Donington’s most historic buildings at the weekend.
A three-day event called ‘Early Music for the Curious’, celebrated medieval and renaissance music at Wykes Manor Retreat Centre, the former home of 18th century landowner Thomas Cowley.
Tutor Ian Pittaway led the sessions and introduced participants to instruments such as the viola da gamba, lute, bray harp, concertinas and 12-string guitars.
His expertise in early music has led to him being involved in projects such as BBC TV’s Horrible Histories series, school visits and historical re-enactments.
He said: “People came from Norfolk, Cardiff, London and the south coast for the event.
“This was the first time I have run a whole weekend on my own. One of my friends, Jenny Bell, a lute player and songwriter, suggested Wykes Manor.
“It is a beautiful venue and we had a 17th century feast on the Saturday evening with also vegan and gluten-free options.”
And people were able to learn new styles of music while bringing in their own ideas and creativity.
“One of the ideas was using contrary motion where two voices start on the same note and move in different directions,” Ian added.
“It was interesting to see what different groups came up with.”
