Spalding publican raises concerns about energy bills

Some publicans are still facing issues from the effect of the pandemic and with rising energy bills.

Keir Moore, of The Moorings in Spalding is concerned that utilities may double in cost.

Concerns about energy bills had previously been raised by David and Kathleen Filby, of The Bell in Weston Hills.

Mr Moore said: “I am aware that electricity and gas will be reviewed – at the moment we pay £2,000 but if they don’t cap it, it could be £4,000.

“It is okay being in credit but we are coping with all the rates.”

Having bought the pub some ten years ago, they are still dealing with the knock-on effect when pubs were forced to close in the pandemic – and needs to be open seven days a week.

Mr Moore said: “We are a busy pub as we are open seven days a week but trade has been quiet.

“Everybody still has a job which is a good thing.”

With other pubs facing a hike in business rates, Mr Moore hopes that it will not affect The Moorings, perhaps as they are a smaller establishment. He said: “With business rates I don’t think we’ve been hit too badly as we are not too big.

“We have no kitchen at all upstairs which makes a difference – and a 56 capacity when full.”

The landlord also thinks trends have changed, with people drinking at home more often as it is cheaper - which affects the pub's day-to-day atmosphere and custom.

He added: “I want to encourage people to go out.

“I prefer to go to a pub for the atmosphere and if it costs £7 for a pint of my favourite beer I am happy to spend it.”

An increase in suppliers’ costs has also affected trade and Mr Moore concluded: “A box of tomatoes that cost £7 now costs £18 and my job is to get the best deal possible.

“We have to be smart in this area and keep it affordable for the customer.

“We are just doing enough to be in profit.”
