Long Sutton Youth Shed event teaches youngsters to learn a trade

A team of young people have jumped at the opportunity to get involved in a practical new hobby.

The Long Sutton Youth Shed, at the Silverwood Centre, opened up to new members at the weekend, with 25 youngsters taking the chance to have a go at learning a trade.

The initiative - set up by Jack Tyrrell, Ivan Thompson and David Wilkinson - will encourage teenagers to find out the practical skills they suit while broadening their horizons.

Coun Tyrrell said: “We wanted to see what interest there was and what areas they wanted to do. One lad wanted to do decorating, others were interested in carpentry, bricklaying, and mechanics.

“We had a few girls interested in it - especially the mechanics - which we’re really pleased about.

“It’s been overwhelming to see the interest. There’s not another thing like this in the country so we’re really excited about it

“We’ve kept it free of charge as we want to encourage people to come along, but this means we do need some funding to come through to ensure we can get it running.”

Jack also thanked Howdens for providing kitchen units, D Brown Builders for their donations of money and materials and Buildbase for providing some much needed tools.

It is hoped that the shed will be open by the start of April, with members of the Men’s Shed giving their time to help to teach the next generations.
