Volunteers turned the centre of Holbeach into a picture of summer through a community initiative led by Lincolnshire Co-op.

The team of workers, who included Co-op staff from Holbeach Community Hub in Fleet Street and the town's funeral home in Church Street, Spalding Funeral Home, Whaplode Food Store and Filling Station and Long Sutton Food Store, put on their gardening gloves to brighten up the churchyard.

Volunteers pulled up weeds and filled the borders along paths and railings with new flowers, while planters around the grounds were spruced up and replanted, grass around the churchyard was cut back and tidied up.

Graham Rudkin, chairman of Holbeach in Bloom, said:“I’ve never known this many people come and help us in just one day.

"Nearly all the work that was done by the volunteers would have taken a week to do by three of us from Holbeach in Bloom.

"That's why I jumped at the chance to get Lincolnshire Co-op involved and it was a great community event as there was people here, not just from Holbeach, but from all over the district as well.”

The Big Co-op Clean in Holbeach was one of a series of volunteer days which brought staff and members of Lincolnshire Co-op together to tidy up outdoor spaces and community areas.

Richard Moore, of Co-op's Holbeach Funeral Home, said: “It was a brilliant experience to see everyone enjoying the opportunity of getting involved so that the church could look at its best for the Holbeach community."

Helen Rowley, a Lincolnshire Co-op member from Holbeach, said: "I decided to take part after a relative who heard about the event told me the details of it.

“There was a really nice atmosphere on the day and it's great to be able to say ‘I helped with that’".

In a message on social media, the vicar of Holbeach, the Reverend Rosamund Seal, said: "It was so heartening to see so many people working away each time I walked through the churchyard.

"Thank you to everyone who helped in any way."
