South Holland District Council say there are no safety concerns for Holbeach beacon as locals highlight a rotten post

The Holbeach Beacon has proven a focal point for the community during many public celebrations but this may have to temporarily change.

The beacon - located on Wignal's Gate and Spalding Road - has been lit over the years to celebrate a number of events, including the 2022 Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

However, it seems the popular meeting point will be out of action for the upcoming VE Day and World War Two tributes planned for May 8.

This is because the wooden post is reported to be suffering from rot.

But South Holland District Council - which owns the land on which the beacon sits - has denied that there are any safety concerns regarding the beacon.

A spokesman said: “There are no concerns about the beacon’s structural safety, however, as we have received an enquiry about it we will reinspect accordingly.”

Holbeach Parish Council has confirmed that they are in discussions with South Holland District Council, which is responsible for the beacon, about potential repair work.

“However, it is apparent that it will not be ready in time for May 8,” a statement explained.

Due to this, the parish council’s Events and PR Committee is organising an alternative event in Carter’s Park for May 8, which will run from from 5pm-10pm.

“We will mark the occasion with lighting lamps of peace at 9.30pm,” the statement added.
