District news from Holbeach, Spalding, Deeping St James, and Long Sutton
The results of a festive trolley dash is among the latest news from our villages and towns.
Spalding & District Stamp Club
Chairman Dahlia Harrison welcomed members to the November evening meeting of Spalding & District Stamp Club. After quickly dealing with business matters she moved to start her display titled ‘Fairy Tales to Fantasy’.
Dahlia began by saying that children are first taught to speak and then read.
She had created this display during Lockdown as an idea to show young people how reading could be brought into our hobby and to encourage them to collect stamps.
The display showed stamps, first day covers, maxi cards and included postcards both early and modern from Great Britain and many other countries to illustrate the theme.
There were too many authors to list here but she said that whilst for some like Charles Dickens there was material available for a long display for others there was perhaps only one stamp.
A set depicting Ladybird books was shown together with a set of Poster stamps for Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales.
The pages for Beatrix Potter also included some of the 50p coins issued by the Royal Mint.
The books of J J R Tolkien are another theme for which there are many stamps and here Dahlia included details, but not actual covers, of 25 special first day cancellations available when Royal Mail issued a set of stamps to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of ‘Lord of the Rings’.
She closed the first half by mentioning ‘Harry Potter’ saying that the books and films were enjoyed by all ages.
In the second half Dahlia included Sherlock Holmes as crime fiction, Robert Burns and other romantic poets and William Shakespeare as a poet and playwright. A number of foreign authors were also shown followed by some nursery rhymes.
In closing the display Dahlia showed a number of depicting flowers together with appropriate poems like William Wordsworth’s Daffodils as example of how such a display can be extended.
The next meeting of the club is on Wednesday 7th December when we will hold the annual ‘Egg Cup’ competition followed by a Christmas social time.
The club is not meeting over the holiday period and the next evening meeting will be on Tuesday January 24 when there will be a display of WWII material.
At the afternoon meeting on Wednesday 1st February members are invited to bring a nine page display on a subject beginning with the letter N, O or P.
Meetings are held in the Fraiser Room, next to the church, Gosberton Road, Surfleet. For more information contact Joyce Boyer on 01775 762661.
Deeping St James
Linden Homes, part of Vistry Yorkshire, is giving its Lincolnshire homebuyers a special, locally-themed treat this December, to mark each new purchase.
Throughout December, homebuyers that complete their property purchase at Linden Homes’ Springfields development in Deeping St James, and its other developments in the county, will receive an individually and locally curated Christmas themed hamper on the day they move into their new property.
Vistry sourced Lincolnshire suppliers and products will be included in each hamper in a show of support for local businesses.
The hampers will contain a selection of Christmas food and drink products including mince pies, shortbread, tea, coffee, chutney, chocolate, and prosecco that Vistry hopes will be a welcome treat at the end of a busy and tiring moving day.
Vistry Yorkshire’s regional managing director, Scott Stothard said: “Moving days can be stressful and tiring at the best of times – especially close to Christmas – and we want our homebuyers to start enjoying their new home from the very first time they step inside.
“Our Christmas hampers are a little something that we hope will go a long way in helping our homebuyers settle in and get in the Christmas spirit.
“We’ve sourced and included produce from Lincolnshire suppliers as our Christmas hampers are a great opportunity to showcase local products. I hope our homebuyers enjoy the Christmas hampers as they celebrate the first night in their new property.”
Holbeach
Local winner Andrew McLaughlin has won a trolley full of Christmas goodies thanks to discount retailer QD – QualityDiscounts.com in Holbeach. Andrew has just completed a 60 second trolley dash in the QD store, scooping a festive haul worth £322.92.
QD ran the competition for its Reward Card holders, with shoppers entered into the draw every time they made a purchase in-store during October. Customers without a Reward Card could pick one up for free at QD.
The trolley dash saw Andrew, whizzing around the aisles in the store’s Christmas department, filling his trolley with festive items including a large Santa figure, Christmas tree and decorations.
Adam Buss, manager at QD Holbeach, said: “We were delighted to welcome Andrew for his Christmas trolley dash. The team here all cheered Andrew on as he stacked his trolley full of goodies. With so much in our Christmas department this year, it was hard to choose what to go for!
“It was a pleasure to help spread some Christmas cheer with this competition at a time when so many people are finding things tough with the cost of living crisis and increased energy bills. We’re pleased to give this early Christmas present to Andrew from the QD family to his.”
Winner Andrew McLaughlin said: “This was a very enjoyable opportunity, despite bumping into a few things! Adam and the team looked after me very well throughout. Thank you to QD for arranging this for me, it’s very much appreciated.”
Long Sutton Parish Council
The parish council will make a donation to the Long Sutton Library Warm Space project of a large water urn to assist with providing hot drinks at the request of the organisers.
