Three says 5G is 'vital' for Spalding as it weighs up next move
The company behind plans for 5G mobile phone masts in Spalding says it is now weighing up its next move.
Three had wanted to build masts in Wygate Park and Birch Grove but saw both turned down by councillors last week.
The company has not yet decided whether to appeal the decision – but says 5G services are needed in the town.
A spokesman told the Lincolnshire Free Press: “5G rollout is vital for residents and businesses of Spalding. We want to offer the community a reliable network experience and believe a new site will be critical to making that happen.
“We will study the refusal notices and consider the points carefully before deciding next steps.”
At the meeting, a number of members questioned why the masts needed to be built in residential areas. Three said the masts need to placed close to where people are using the services – and says locations are picked in order to ensure the “widest breadth of coverage”.
The firm declined to comment on criticism of the information supplied with its application or calls for it to explain its full strategy for 5G masts in Spalding.
5G is the next generation of mobile internet technology – and is being promoted by networks as a way to enjoy faster download and upload speeds. It uses radio waves on high frequency bands which have a high capacity but cover shorter distances.
