Jay Rayner's BBC Radio 4 panel show The Kitchen Cabinet is a hit at its recording in Spalding

Music festival Barbecue '67, pumpkins and potatoes were just some of the topics discussed when BBC Radio 4 recorded a show in Spalding.

Around 200 people attended the recording of culinary panel show 'The Kitchen Cabinet' at The Vista Hall last Tuesday evening (October 15).

The programme was hosted by writer, broadcaster, food critic and jazz musician Jay Rayner, who is also well-known as a critic on TV's MasterChef.

Sarah Chadd, parish administrator for Spalding's St Mary and St Nicolas Church, which was contacted by the programme's producers to record in the town, said: "As promised, it was witty, fast-moving, and funny, with lots of interesting information about food and cooking.

"Each show has a local twist and for Spalding this included a reference to Barbecue ’67, sausages, potatoes and pumpkins.

"Members of the audience were invited to submit questions and about seven lucky individuals had an opportunity to put their questions to the panel of experts.

"The panel included food historian Dr Annie Gray, who provided some quirky facts about Georgian sausages and the use of root vegetables in cakes!

"Panel members had brought along samples of cakes, pumpkin seeds and other delights to taste and discuss, which members of the audience fell upon at the end of the recording."

Sarah said that she also received a message from the show's assistant producer with their thanks and comments on how smoothly the show went and the incredible turn out.

Paul Crewe and Jonathan Nicholls, who is well known for his quirky pumpkin carvings and creations at Spalding Pumpkin Festival, were invited along and re-created the face of Jay Rayner on a pumpkin.

Last year, BBC Radio 4 visited the parish church to record ‘Any Questions?’ hosted by Jonathan Dimbleby, and the Rev John Bennett was interviewed for the show ‘The Patch’, which was repeated again recently.

The recording of The Kitchen Cabinet in Spalding will be broadcast on Saturday, October 26, at 10.30am, repeated at 3pm on Tuesday 29 and then available on BBC Sounds.
