Spalding United offering free entry and a bacon roll
Senior citizens are being offered free admission to a football match this weekend – and a complimentary bacon roll.
Spalding United are encouraging older sports fans to make the most of the offer and enjoy Saturday’s home match against fellow promotion chasers Sporting Khalsa.
Under 11s can also gain free entry to the contest.
“Hopefully it’ll introduce some new fans to the club and be a chance to say thank you to existing fans with free entry and a bacon roll,” said CEO Leigh Porter, who hopes the offer can help some older sports fans reignite their love affair with live sport.
“One of the nicest things for me is when I walk around the ground and someone pulls me to one side to say they’re enjoying it and will come back again.
“A lot of people over the age of 65 are very experienced in football and watching football; and to have their passion, knowledge and experience around the ground is great.
“It’s about community spirit. We want to take the club forward on and off the pitch and it’s a community project.”
Tulips general manager Jonathan Barnett has been handing out tickets at local care homes as well arranging transport to help some older fans get to the stadium.
“We just want top give something back to the community,” Mr Barnett said.
“Some people perhaps can’t afford to get to the football with the cost of living crisis, so with the ticket and the bacon roll we want to look after the community.
“We’ve taken tickets to a few care homes and we’ve had a good response.”
In what promises to be an enthralling contest, the title-chasing Tulips currently sit second in the Northern Premier League Midlands, with weekend opponents Sporting Khalsa a place off the play-offs in sixth.
Admission costs £10 for adults and £2 for under 18s, with under 11s and over 65s going free.
Over 65s with tickets are asked to bring them to the match on Saturday, but tickets will be available on the gate for supporters without.
Saturday’s contest kicks off at the Sir Halley Stewart ground at 3pm.
