Brexit worries allayed by Spalding solicitor

Foreign nationals are providing an “incredible contribution” to the NHS and agricultural industry in Lincolnshire, according to a Spalding solicitor.

To mark International Migrants Day last month, Louis Harman, Head of Immigration at Chattertons Solicitors & Wealth Management, has spoken about the valuable contribution foreign nationals make to the county.

His advice to employers and employees is ‘not to panic’ about post Brexit fears.

Louis said: “I deal extensively with employers and employees entering the medical and agricultural sectors. The NHS and private medical practices in Lincolnshire, particularly in the south of the county, rely heavily on foreign nationals to plug serious skill shortages here in the UK.

“I recently represented 10 to 15 specialists; doctors and consultants from Bangladesh, India, Egypt and Iran. They simply needed reassurance that their position in the UK was safe and protected.

"The level of contribution they provide is incredible, without them, the health care system simply wouldn’t function. The same can be said for the agricultural sector, where we have been called out to businesses in Spalding to advise entire workforces of foreign nationals, mostly European, who need reassurance and clarity on their rights so that business can continue as usual.”

“With Brexit on the horizon for many, now is a scary time. Post Brexit, employers are seeking reassurance on how to retain a system that brings in hardworking, valuable people who will contribute to the economy. I’m busy assisting employers across all areas to help them bring and retain that talent in the UK.”

Healthcare and agriculture are not the only sectors affected by these issues. The creative and sporting industries, as well as specialist-engineering firms, are feeling the pressure too.

Louis added: “The way these industries work is to recruit seasonal workers or performers, but the fears surrounding Brexit mean that people are simply leaving the country, when in fact they are protected by law.

"However, when we leave the EU, Brexit will actually provide more transparency for all who travel and recruit staff from Europe and the rest of the world. For example, European workers will have visas or residence cards, so they can easily prove their right to work and live here in the UK – it will become clear and consistant. There is no need to panic.”
